When Tāwhiao Matutaera Tukaroto Te Wherowhero was born in May 1822, in Waikato, New Zealand, his father, King Potatau Te Wherowhero, was 47 and his mother, Whakaawi, was 33. During his kingship, his cousin Te Puea Hērangi exerted a strong influence on and provided practical leadership within the Kīngitanga. A rangatira, and a religious figure – a tohunga ariki – Tāwhiao amassed power and authority during a time of momentous change, to become de facto leader of the Waikato tribes.
